The founder and CEO of Alevea, Amanda Epperly, says her mission is to “build a community that embraces and nurtures the unique needs of individuals and families with mental illness.” She believes that the community of people with mental illness can heal themselves and ultimately help others.
Alevea does a lot of great work, but for me, my issues with mental illness aren’t just about the fact that I have some serious issues. I also spend a lot of time thinking about my mental health in general, and I wonder how it is possible for so many people to be struggling with mental health issues. I’m not a fan of the idea that mental illness is just “bad luck.
I think mental illness is a real issue, but I think it’s important to understand that most mental illnesses arent the result of bad luck. Mental illness is more of a biological condition and can be a side effect of a variety of things, including genetics, mental health issues, or brain injuries, or whatever else makes a person go off the rails.
Mental illness is much harder to diagnose, but we can get a lot more accurate than we used to. We can even have some pretty good tests to help with this. With genetic testing, we can find that some people with certain diseases or disorders are more likely to develop the same diseases or disorders later in life, and this can often be traced back to certain family members who are carriers.
The same goes for mental illness. Just like we all have some genetic predisposition to be prone to mental illness, we can also have certain family members who inherit certain predispositional traits that make them more likely to develop mental illness later in life. So although we may not know exactly why someone develops bipolar or schizophrenia later in life, we may be able to narrow down a possible cause.
For mental illness, there are two groups of genetic factors that can be linked to mental illness. One is the so-called “major histocompatibility complex” or MHC, which is very common in the human population. People that carry this MHC gene have a higher risk of developing mental illness. The second group is related to the dopamine system, which is a receptor system that’s involved in regulating the brain (and therefore the brain’s moods).
The fact that we can identify a genetic link to a mental illness in the first place is a good thing. It means that we know something about the cause of the disease. However, we can’t be certain about the exact mechanism. It’s still not fully understood, so we can’t use this as a “cure.
This gene is not related to the dopamine system, but it is related to the dopaminergic system in the brain. This system is involved in regulating the brain and is highly connected to the mood system. The dopaminergic system is involved in regulating the dopamine levels and therefore the brain’s moods. When your dopamine level is high you feel happy, and when your dopamine level is low, you become depressed.
