I’ve written about the importance of self-awareness for more than a decade now. The problem is you can’t really change your circumstances, but you can make the best choice you can. That’s what the first step is. You make the choice to acknowledge your thoughts, beliefs, and feelings and to act on them.
What you and I call the first step is not always consciously aware. For some of us, it’s not even a conscious choice. For the rest of us, we are unconsciously aware. By the way, if you have any doubts about the importance of self-awareness, watch that “self-awareness” scene from the movie The Matrix.
I recently read a quote by the great philosopher and author Dr.
Einstein. He said, “We think we are what we think we are. We think we are what we think we are, and we think we are what we think we are. But we are what we are.
For the most part, I think Einstein was right. By the way, my last post mentioned one of the most important things you can do for yourself to not only improve your life, but to truly live your life to the fullest. But this one is important too.
If you’re not conscious of what you’re doing, then you can’t really tell if you’re doing it right. When you’re not aware of everything that you’re doing, you can’t tell if you’re doing it for the right reasons. You can be aware of what you’re doing, and when you’re not, you can’t really tell if you’re doing it for the right reasons.
I think this is a great one. Everyone has done this at some point in their lives. I personally use this as a daily ritual to remind myself that I care about my own health. I like to remind myself of this every morning. Even if I’m feeling good, I like to remind myself to check my blood sugar.
Just like behavioral health, it doesn’t matter what you do in life. It matters how you do it. If you don’t take care of yourself and treat yourself with respect, it can lead to a myriad of problems.
People who are obese are more likely to have diabetes than those who are not obese. And the more obese people you’re around, the more likely you are to develop type 2 diabetes. Yet, we live in a society where people have access to all the information and tools necessary to prevent a life-threatening disease.
The problem is that there are too many people who don’t take proper care of themselves. They get sick or they get lazy, and sometimes they just say “fuck it” and walk away. If we want to change the behavior of the public, we need to focus on what we can do to change the behavior of the people who have the power to make any change.
