It’s a shame that there are not much health care conferences out there that are open to the general public where you can just walk in, have a question, and be treated like an equal person. The conference schedule only contains some of the very most popular ones, even though a lot of them are not available at all.
There is a big conference that is open to the general public called the American Congress of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual conference. This annual conference is usually held in mid-October in the largest city, such as Phoenix, with 1,000 attendees. This year it is held in early October in Washington, DC; the conference has a much smaller attendance of about 300. It is open to the public and is a large gathering of surgeons and orthopaedic healthcare professionals.
Many of the orthopaedic healthcare professionals who attend this conference are not in the industry anymore, so it’s hard for them to get there. However, in 2015 there will be a new, much smaller conference, Orthopaedic Conference of the Americas. This conference will also be held in mid-October and is open to doctors and surgeons in the U.S. and Canada only.
It’s too bad this isn’t an annual event because it could be a great opportunity to meet new surgeons and learn more about orthopaedic healthcare. However, the smaller conference has been held at a number of different locations, so it’s not at all clear what impact it will have.

Conference meetings can be a great way for us to get to know each other and develop a professional network. Because conference attendees are not doctors or surgeons, we will be able to have a more personal, face to face interaction with patients.
